Environmental, Social and Governance Leader – Contractor

FC Civils Solution with EKFB

FC Civils Solutions Ltd (FCCS), is a specialised contractor delivering end-to-end design and construction solutions. FCCS was pivotal in the redesign of HS2’s 880m Thame Valley Viaduct (TVV) , developing a predominantly prefabricated design that saved carbon, time, cost, enhancing quality and safety in construction. To maximise these associated benefits, this approach was then applied to the 515m Edgcote Viaduct, under construction, allowing for the application of lessons learnt, providing further benefits to the wider HS2 project. The redesign of TVV involved changing major elements from cast in-situ to prefabrication. The key changes are:1. Piers changed from precast shells with in-situ concrete fill to fully precast units. 2. Number of beams reduced from four to two. 3. In-situ concrete diaphragm replaced with 80mm grout diaphragm and post-tensioning bars to connect beams longitudinally. 4. Permanent deck formwork (precast planks) re-designed to cantilever over the sides and provide deck side formwork.

Our strategic priorities include a focus on Net Zero, actively transforming mindsets across our culture and influencing our supply chain. Our People and Culture pillar embeds the benefits of social value across all our projects, in addition to better environmental accountability and more. Two other strategy pillars, MMC and Digital Transformation, allow for more conscious sustainable solutions to be utilised on our sites.

Strabag UK

STRABAG is a global construction group that entered the UK market in 2011, growing from 157 to 1500 employees. Our goal is to create positive legacies and generate social value through our projects, and this has been realised, evidenced by our delivery of £955,000,000 in social value return on investment. In this way, we not only deliver positive social value impacts, but also additional social value that mirrors and mitigates construction impacts of our projects. Central to this has been our Social Conscience, giving employees the support, training and technical development to enable our roadmap to success. We have delivered 32% towards our SV target which incorporates the goal to achieve our carbon neutral goal by 2040 and zero construction waste by 2030. In a short six-year period we’ve established ourselves in the top 5% of the UK construction sector and demonstrated how a people-centric approach can exceed industry standards.
