Judging Process

Each category, excluding Best Places to Work, has its own independent panel of judges, made up of major clients and industry figures, who review entries to determine the shortlist and conduct live presentations to select the winners for that category.

Stage 1: Online Judging — once the entry phase closes, judges review online and score each submission to determine the shortlist.

Stage 2: Live Presentations — shortlisted finalists present to the judging panel between 27 April and 6 May 2027

Hints & Tips

This is your chance to tell your the story of your department and organisations impact in key civil engineering sectors. All good stories have a structure so remember to start your entry along the following lines:

  • Beginning: Provide the judges with information on your achievements to date and the main impact you would like your department or organisation recognised for
  • Middle: Explain how you delivered your results and provide supporting evidence, facts, figures or testimonials to support any statements you make
  • End: What makes your entry stand out and remind the judges of your key achievements

To ensure that your submission is your best work, consider the following as well:

  • Preparation is key: now that you know the deadline, allow yourself plenty of time to write, develop and submit your entry – coming back to it with a fresh pair of eyes can help you remember important details that may make the difference between being shortlisted and just missing out
  • Make the judges' job easy: write in clear, plain English, avoid too much jargon and use bullet points where appropriate to break up the text
  • Pay attention to grammar and spelling: poorly presented entries lack credibility so don't lose out on being shortlisted on something you could have easily avoided
  • Involve the right people: involve your teams in developing the entry or even external partners who will often see the great work you do that you might overlook
  • Back up your entry: take advantage of the option to attach documents to support your entry with useful information that will help the judges to understand the impact of your work
  • Proofread, proofread, proofread: ask someone else to look through your entry before you submit. It can be helpful to ask someone who was not directly involved in your department or organisation – like the judges they will not have detailed knowledge so they may suggest ways to clarify your entry

What's New

Best Places to Work is changing — and it's a change built to make winning mean all the more.

Traditionally, entrants have made their case in writing, and a judging panel has decided who makes the cut. This year, we're handing that decision to the people the award is truly about: your own employees.

The NCE Awards has partnered with Workforce Research Group, an independent workplace-culture research specialist, to run Best Places to Work for 2027. Every entering organisation takes part in a two-part survey — one for the employer, one for employees — designed and analysed by researchers who do this for a living.

The result is a set of winners built on evidence from the people in your business. Entrants can also choose to purchase a detailed benchmarking report, showing how their organisation compares with the wider industry on engagement, culture, leadership, reward, wellbeing, and more.

Why enter

  • Credibility — real employee feedback carries real weight, with clients and competitors alike.
  • It's more useful — choose to add a benchmarked report most companies would otherwise pay a research agency separately for — a clear, data-led view of where you're strong and where you need to invest
  • It's less work, more insight — there's no lengthy written submission or live presentation to prepare — entering means running a survey of your own workforce that surfaces the truth about how your organisation is experienced day to day.
  • It's public, not just private — winners are published and recognised through New Civil Engineer's own coverage, giving people researching your business independent proof, not just a badge on your own website.

In an industry that's fighting hard to attract and keep talent, being able to prove — not just claim — that you're a great place to work is a genuine competitive edge.
