Impact in Rail

This award recognises consulting firms consulting firms within the construction and civil engineering industry that provide services within the rail sector.

AJMS Consultants

AJMS Consultants are helping rail contractors deliver successful projects by providing flexible, responsive and high-quality civil design solutions. We deliver designs primarily for minor civils and structures in Signalling and Electrification projects and Temporary Works Design. Our strategy is to have client satisfaction at the fore of everything we do. We set company and project goals focusing on our clients’ immediate needs with a ‘can do’ attitude. Providing assurances that Health, Safety and Environment, Sustainability and Social Value are the backbone of what we deliver, is key to our clients. We play to the strength of an SME, with our flexible and responsive nature, allowing our clients to successfully deliver, particularly within the railway where tight and pressured programmes and budgets prevail. Our client focus offers efficiency through pragmatic and innovative design delivery with early collaboration and engagement, alongside our understanding of the complexities of rail projects.

Amey

Amey, in partnership with Transport for Wales (TfW), is revolutionising the Core Valley Lines (CVL) through an innovative electrification project. Overcoming significant engineering challenges, Amey devised a cost-effective, sustainable solution using discontinuous electrification with permanently earthed sections (PES). This approach, combined with new multi-mode rolling stock, reduces capital costs and ensures uninterrupted power supply. A comprehensive traction power model was developed for validation and optimisation, evolving into a tool capable of modelling train movement and power consumption across the UK rail network. This pioneering hybrid electrification solution promises to bring Metro-style passenger services to South Wales, marking a new era in sustainable rail travel.

AtkinsRéalis and innDex

AtkinsRéalis engaged innDex, a leading technology provider and end-to-end digital workforce management platform, as their preferred software solution. Working together over the past 18 months AtkinsRéalis has undergone a major transformation in the way it manages it’s projects on site. From an initial project trial AtkinsRéalis quickly experienced the benefits of the platform and have now deployed it across their entire project portfolio. With innDex now ingrained in their processes, AtkinsRéalis continues to set new benchmarks in the rail industry, demonstrating the power of technology-driven solutions in achieving project success. This collaboration marks a new era of digital innovation, service excellence, and operational efficiency, setting new standards across the Rail sector where it can offer wide-ranging opportunities to transform project and site performance.

Currie & Brown

Currie & Brown is a world-leading provider of project management, cost management and advisory services. Since 2021, our rail business has experienced significant year-on-year revenue growth. This has been supported by our expanding team, which has grown by approximately 20% since 2022. This impressive trajectory has been fuelled by our investment in our regional hubs in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, and Manchester, as well as our central London office. Our commitment to service excellence, innovation, and collaborative problem-solving has ensured successful project deliveries and positioned us as industry trailblazers. From large-scale ventures to intricate projects, we’ve consistently delivered value for key clients including:

    • Network Rail (Eastern, Northwest & Central, Southern, Wales & Western)

    • HS2

    • Transport for London

    • Train operation companies (Northern Trains, First Group, Transport for Wales)

We are fully committed to developing solutions that benefit our clients and shape the future of the rail sector.

Fugro

Network Rail required a holistic gauging database that included clearance data from the track to lineside structures, platforms, objects, and the train-to-train passing interface without putting staff at risk in the track environment. Using Fugro’s RILA® system greatly reduced the risk to surveyors working on or near the line, supplying measurement data in a non-disruptive way at significantly lower cost than traditional survey methods. The benefits that the client received were;

    • Reduction of 26,675 on-track exposure hours for engineers and surveyors

    • Stopped 72 minor injuries and 3 major injuries occurring (calculated using Network Rail’s HSE weighted injury formula)

    • Ability to view site and data from remote location

    • Financial savings from speed of survey and a reduction in work hours to collect data

GGP Consult

Our delivery approach to the industry has had a positive impact on the success of every project we have been engaged in, not only doubling our turnover during COVID, but also increasing our turnover in Rail. As we rely upon 95% of our turnover being repeat business (and the remaining 5% from recommendations) our policy is to deliver a service which maximises our chances of being awarded the next phase of the rollout. The delivery of design projects is still about our people - their skills, their attitude and also their reliability. On top of this, we also established GGPGeo and GGP Survey, both with a dedicated team of experienced Surveyors and Technicians providing trackside surveys - by bringing both in-house, we have greatly de-risked our predesign investigations, which has allowed all our designs to be delivered on time and within budget, resulting in a positive impact on delivering
