With over 38 years’ engineering experience Lawrence is currently Transport Scotland’s Director of Major Projects. Responsible for the roads programme, including the £multibillion A9 and A96 Dualling projects, he is also Director of Purchasing. This follows various roles within Transport Scotland including Head of Rail Projects and Technical Services, with the most notable role being Project Manager for the iconic £1.35 billion Queensferry Crossing where Lawrence saw the project through from inception to completion over an 11 year period, and gained the Royal Academy of Engineering Major Projects Award in 2020 for his role. In his early career, Lawrence was a project manager with Thorburn Colquhoun, now AECOM, working extensively on the £multi million, 45 mile long A14 M1-A1 link road. Lawrence is actively involved with the Institution of Civil Engineers, having been Chair of ICE Scotland (2017/18) and Glasgow & West of Scotland (2014/15). He is also Transport Scotland’s Supervising Civil Engineer responsible for ICE graduate training.
